Spiders - oh my!

Print I made for Print Day in May: Monotype of a Mexican Red-kneed Tarantula.

These spiders are so interesting! They are also gorgeous! When I was a docent at the local zoo, this was one of my favorite animals to share with people.

The Mexican Red-kneed Tarantula is found in the Pacific and Western Mexico, in scrublands and forests. Even though they have large "fangs", their bite is pretty harmless to people (unless you have an allergic reaction). You shouldn't handle them with bare hands though, because the hairs on their abdomens can be irritating to skin. In fact, they use their legs to fling them at predators to irritate eyes, skin, etc.

The females tend to long outlive the males; if she is not receptive to his mating tactics she will see him as a food source, and even after mating she may kill him. The males typically live to about 5 years old, and the females up 30. They reach about 6 inches in leg span when fully grown, which takes about ten years!

Print Day in May, the first Saturday in May, celebrates the art and community of printmakers. It’s a day to get together in studios across the world to make prints.

This Saturday, May 3rd is the annual Print Day in May (PDM). Started in 2007 by Robynn Smith and the MPC Printmakers, the annual community printmaking event has spread across the world; Printmakers from all over join together in studios and via social media to print and share their work.

It's a day when the international printmaking community comes together to celebrate and share this inspiring medium with others.

Participation is open to anyone.  To be included on the official PDM artist list, visit the blog or Facebook page and leave a comment stating your name and location you'll be printing from. Then send photos throughout the day to be posted and shared on the sites.

This year I'm maintaining the artist list, and will be updating the blog with photos from participants as the day progresses. Be sure to check back over the course of the following week to see all the photos that are posted of the completed works.

Will you be participating? Will you be blogging about the day? Leave me a comment below.

Kim Munson - At my studio in San Jose, CA. Monotype print.
Yesterday, was the first Saturday in May, which means it was also International Print Day in May.  Printmakers worldwide printed "together" via blog and Facebook. I spent the afternoon making a monotype at my home studio, in San Jose, CA.

Visit the official Print Day in May blog to see all the print activity: http://printdayinmay.mpcprintmakers.org

"Print Day in May began in 2007 at Monterey Peninsula College (MPC), Monterey, CA. The MPC Fine Art Print Club (now the MPC Printmakers) created it to encourage  printmakers everywhere to create prints on the same day . . . an all-inclusive
printmaking effort! Join the MPC Printmakers, and make some prints during Print  Day in May!"

Today I continued to celebrate Print Day in May with eight other printmakers, at the San Jose ICA Print Center. Although I didn't make my own prints, I ran the press and "printed" with a wonderful group of women. The group included myself, Devi M., Beth Redmond, Michele & Lena Kelly, Linda Lee Kerr, Carolyn Gil, Crystal Hudson, and Alina Voung. These ladies got a lot done! It was a pleasure working with them. See a sampling of today's work below.
Did you print today? Leave a comment and let me know what you made. Happy Printing!

Print Day in May

Print Day in May is the day after tomorrow! It is an annual event that always takes place the first Saturday in May, where printmakers form around the world print "together" by making prints wherever they are, and then sharing with the International Printmaking Community on the official Print Day in May blog.

The event was started on May 5, 2007 by the MPC Printmakers and artist Robynn Smith. Every year participation grows as artists from all over the world print and share. This year, in addition to the official Print Day in May (PDM) blog site, there is now an official Print Day in May Facebook page.

I am fortunate to be part of the MPC Printmakers and helping with PDM. I will be printing with many of them and Robynn Smith this year in Monterey, CA.  We are hoping to have more participants this year than ever before!

If you would like to take part, it's very easy:
1) Print something, anything! A footprint in the sand, even a fingerprint counts!
2) Share with printmakers worldwide on our blog: http://printdayinmay.mpcprintmakers.org
3) Enjoy

Every comment, photo, or just an "I intend to print", goes a long way to fostering community among Printmakers worldwide.

Happy Printing!
